Anna Achilleos-Staeubli at Art Athina 2025 with Marginalia Gallery, Booth R31
Marginalia Gallery presents a selection of new encaustic works by Anna Achilleos-Staeubli, exploring the luminous depths of Mediterranean waters through the ancient medium of beeswax, damar resin, and fire. Born and raised in Cyprus, Anna draws from childhood memories of sulfur-scented copper mines and crystalline coastal waters to create her distinctive marine paintings.
Working with natural pigments including the celebrated Green Earth of Cyprus—Terre Verte de Chypre—the artist layers translucent wax to capture the ever-shifting textures and colors of the sea. Her encaustic technique mirrors the geological processes that shaped her island homeland, where molten wax becomes a metaphor for both artistic transformation and cultural memory.
These intimate seascapes reveal Anna Achilleos-Staeubli's mastery of a medium that demands both technical precision and intuitive response. Through controlled applications of heat, she achieves remarkable depth and luminosity, evoking the play of light on water and the ancient connection between Cyprus and the Mediterranean that has defined her artistic journey from tourist guide to painter.
The works on display continue her lifelong exploration of place and memory, expressed through a visual language that honors both contemporary practice and the timeless materials of her ancestral landscape.
